Cleanings & Deep Cleaning

Cleanings & Deep Cleaning
Even if you brush and floss regularly, you must get your teeth cleaned professionally regularly. Why? Because, although brushing and flossing are excellent measures to prevent teeth cavities and gum problems – unfortunately, these measures are not enough. That’s where professional cleaning becomes essential. Why is Tooth Brushing and Flossing not Enough? When we brush our teeth, we remove the food debris from the visible surfaces of our teeth. Similarly, when we floss, we remove most of the food particles that have been dislodged between the adjacent teeth. Despite that, a thin layer of food debris gradually forms on our teeth – called the dental plaque – that is an ideal breeding place for the bacteria that cause gum disease. Over time, the plaque hardens and becomes a calcified mass – called the calculus.
Cleanings and Deep Cleaning
Why are Regular Professional Teeth Cleaning Necessary? Disease-causing bacteria to utilize sugars from the plaque and calculus deposits – and release harmful products that result in the destruction of the fibers that attach our teeth to the gums and jawbone. Eventually, the gums start to recede from their original position – resulting in pocket formation between gums and the teeth – further aggravating food impaction and gum recession. If the situation is not corrected timely, the teeth start to become loose, and ultimately fall off. This situation can be easily prevented – through regular teeth cleanings. What is Professional Teeth Cleaning? Teeth cleaning is a procedure in which Dr. Tan will use specialized equipment to remove plaque and tartar deposits from your teeth – that cause gum inflammation. At the early stages, gum inflammation is reversible. Dr. Tan uses special ultrasonic scalers to remove plaque and tartar deposits between the teeth and the gums – that vibrates at very high frequency and is very efficient in removing food and bacterial debris. Dr. Tan recommends that you should visit us for regular checkups – and professional cleaning – at least twice a year. This will ensure that you retain pearly white teeth and healthy, pink gums throughout life. What is Deep Cleaning? At Healdsburg Dental Spa, we perform a deep cleaning to treat advanced gum and periodontal inflammation. Such a situation arises when the inflammation extends to the structure surrounding the teeth – the periodontal ligament and the jawbone. In advanced periodontal inflammation, there is extensive damage to the jawbone – making the teeth significantly mobile – in addition to gum swelling, sensitivity, and spontaneous bleeding. At the Healdsburg Dental Spa, we fix this problem with deep cleaning – also called scaling and root polishing. A deep cleaning procedure at the Healdsburg Dental Spa involves the following:
  • Scaling – Dr. Tan will remove plaque and calculus deposits from the roots – not just the visible surface of the tooth (as done in professional teeth cleaning).
  • Root Planning – after teeth cleaning, Dr. will polish the root surfaces. This is because roughened tooth surfaces promote plaque and calculus deposition – and bacterial proliferation. Polishing minimizes future chances of gum inflammation.
What to Expect After Scaling and Root Planning? After the procedure, you may feel that your teeth have become sensitive – this is normal. This tooth sensitivity should go away within the next few days. If you feel that your teeth are still sensitive after a week, then we recommend that you visit us for a checkup. Similarly, you may experience some gum swelling for a few days. Dr. Tan may prescribe anti-inflammatory and pain medication – or antibiotics for severe infections – to minimize inflammation and pain. Slight bleeding is also normal for a few days.

Did you know that one of the most common causes of bad breath is underlying gum or periodontal inflammation? Another reason for you to get your teeth professionally cleaned regularly. Besides, when you visit us regularly for checkups, you will prevent a lot of other dental problems – as they will be diagnosed at earlier stages – saving your hassle and huge treatment expenditures. So, book a teeth cleaning appointment today for cleanings and deep cleaning at Healdsburg Dental Spa in Healdsburg, CA and walk away with healthy teeth and gums – and a beautiful smile.
